Road Surveying is one of the important tasks in road planning,designing, construction,maintenance, management and quality control practices, particularly for developing repair / maintenance and rehabilitation strategies, budgeting and quality control purposes. In the current field practices, the road asset inventory and pavement condition data surveying are done using various imaging methods since imaging methods are more reliable, efficient and accurate than the other methods of data collection such as manual or vibration based methods. The imaging based method for road data assessment is usually comprised of two steps. The first one is the recording of road visual data (video / images) which is generally called as Data Collection and the other one is the analysis / processing of the recorded visual data for useful information extraction which is generally called as Data Processing.

Most data collected using road surveying equipment / vehicles are of video / image type and big size. Processing and analysis of this big data for useful information extraction and reporting poses several video image processing challenges.
